The demographics of Filipino Americans describe a heterogeneous group of people in the United States who trace their ancestry to the Philippines.
InMaica Quinto-Wong knew what she wanted for her last meal before she moved from her hometown, Manila, to Phoenix.
She and her family went to Jollibee at Ninoy Aquino International Airport, where Quinto-Wong watched other diners bonding over adobo rice and peach mango pies. Jollibee has been a part of many of Quinto-Wong's milestones and memories, from birthday parties to a treat after Sunday Mass, she said.
She's one of many metro Phoenix residents who can't wait for the Jollibee opening in Chandler, the first in Arizona. That's what it is to us, connecting with other Filipinos.
It's a meeting place. The wait could end as early as next month.

An employee at Arizona's first Jollibee confirmed the Filipino fast-food t is aiming for a Dec. Jollibee, a fast-food chain started in the Philippines in the s, has garnered a cult following over the years, including in the United States. The restaurant is known for its versions of popular Filipino dishes including crispy fried chicken called Chicken Joy; Jolly Spaghetti with banana-sweetened ground meat sauce and sliced hot dogs; and Palabok Fiesta, a noodle dish covered in garlic sauce, crushed pork rinds, shrimp and egg.
When the first Arizona location opens, Quinto-Wong is pleased she'll be able to share the Jollibee experience with people who didn't grow up with it, such as her husband, a Chinese American who was born and raised in Phoenix. Aiza Prades, a nurse, said the drive from her home in Glendale to Chandler would be nothing compared to the drive to Las Vegas or Southern California, where the next closest Jollibee restaurants are located.

When she drives back from California, she and her group always stop at Jollibee to order enough food to last a week — buckets of Chicken Joy and party-size platters of Jolly Spaghetti. Prades, who's from Naga, Philippines, said asJollibee was where her parents took her to reward her for good behavior. She and her friends plan to wait in line on opening day if she can get off work.
I think everything there tastes really good. You don't get fast food like that other places, and I don't get the same feeling at McDonald's or Taco Bell or Wendy's. Jollibee is special in how it makes me feel.
Dianne Yorro, a Jollibee spokesperson based in California, said her company chose to expand to Chandler for three reasons:. Chandler has the highest percentage of Asian Americans in the Valley, according to the U. Census Bureau.
Based on a estimate by the federal agency, Asians, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders make up 9. As ofArizona was second in the nation for the fastest-growing Asian populationwith more than half of Arizona Asians born abroad, The Republic reported in Another Asian business giant also has plans to come to Chandler, about six miles west of Jollibee.
There are also several churches throughout the Valley that serve the Filipino community. The Chandler restaurant is still looking to fill positions including line cooks, cashiers and a few more managers for its person team, Ayres said.
That afternoon, year-old Samuel Santos and his father Genaro Santos showed up to Jollibee to apply for a job. Samuel said it would be his first job and as a first-generation Filipino American, he was more excited about the idea of working at Jollibee than he would at any other fast-food place.
Ayres said those interested in working at Jollibee can show up to the restaurant Monday to Saturday, 10 a. Training is scheduled to begin by mid-December, she said.
