When it comes to paying for the first date, most men and women in heterosexual relationships still expect the man to pick up the tab. Just over 77 percent of the more than 1, people across the United States who took part in a recent study — all of whom are in relationships and have been living with their partners for at least six months — said the man should pay the bill.

Broken down by gender, 82 percent of the men and 72 percent of the women said the man should pay the full bill. I'd have to agree. Call me old school or worse, but I think I would have felt less of myself if I ever let a woman foot the bill for the night on a first date.

First dates get expensive by the time you add it all up: dinner, drinks, a hotel room, breakfast in bed in the morning, flowers to her house that afternoon. Come on, you know I'm kidding.

Who sends flowers the day after a first date? My more likely first-date scenario was dinner, drinks and maybe a game or two of pool. If things worked out and I was lucky, that other stuff would happen on some future date. Fingers crossed.

Anyway, whether it was expensive or inexpensive, whether she made more money or I made more, I'm going to be the one paying the bill on a first date. No doubt about it. I certainly don't want to make anyone feel like I expect anything because I'm paying and I don't want to come off as being sexist, so if I am, tell me. It won't hurt my feelings.
But I'll still want to pay.

Now down the road, we can talk about who's picking up the tab I've had some firsts that didn't result in seconds. As for the NerdWallet.

While 56 percent of the men and 59 percent of the women say men still pay for most date nights in their current relationship, around 41 percent of both genders say they split the bill on dates. For household bills, almost 36 percent of men say they pay all the household bills while Around a third of both men and women say they split the bills equally with their partner.

I'd gladly give up any old school gender-based role in that situation. Contact Jeffrey Gentry at jgentry delawareonline.
